    On 14 October 1943, an armed uprising at Sobibór took place and hundreds of prisoners were able to escape.

    The revolt was planned after rumours spread that Sobibór was due to be closed down and dismantled, and all of those who still worked at the site would be murdered.

    By the end of August 1944, around one third of the 5.7m forced labourers in the Greater Reich were women. The majority of female forced labourers came from Eastern Europe.

    This series of photos was taken in Kaunitz following an evacuation march when the camp was liberated by American troops.
